Web Design • Central Queensland
Web design for Central Queensland businesses.
Upstart Lane is a Rockhampton design studio. We build websites in Webflow and Wix Studio for businesses across Rocky, the Capricorn Coast and Gladstone, and for clients further afield who'd rather work with someone they can get on the phone.

Websites
What we build.
New sites and rebuilds, mostly in Webflow. Each one starts with how your customers look for you, then gets built so they can find what they need and get in touch without hunting for it.
Every site is set up for search from day one and designed to WCAG 2.2 AA, the accessibility standard that is expected of modern businesses. In plain terms, it works for people on old phones, people using screen readers, and your customers squinting at it in the sun.
Webflow
Custom design with room to grow, and an editor your team can ues without breaking the layout.

Who it's for
Who we can help.
Only on Facebook?
A social page is a good start, but you don't own it, and it rarely shows up when someone searches Google for what you do. A website gives customers somewhere to land that's yours.
Outgrown your website?
If it was built years ago and nobody's touched it since, it's probably costing you enquiries. We'll tell you honestly whether it needs a rebuild or a fix.
Starting something new?
We set new businesses up with a site structure that grows with them, so adding services, pages or a second location later doesn't mean starting again.
Working within an established brand?
Organisations with brand guidelines, internal teams and systems already in place need someone who builds within them. We have experience building for national brands and becoming part of the team.
Industries we love working with
Allied health · Vets · Trades and local services · Retail · Not-for-profits · Education · National brands
Why local
Built by a local.
We live and work here, and most of our clients are people we might run into at the shops.
Life here runs a little differently. Most people aren’t building their day around a long commute, and plenty of families have a parent working away on a roster. While the atmosphere is more friendly and relaxed, business owners are juggling a lot. We know your customers are making decisions in the evenings, often while on the phone to someone in a different town.
People here also back local businesses, and before they ring, they want to know who they’re dealing with. We build sites that work for that: easy to read on a phone, easy to forward to whoever else gets a say, with the people behind the business front and centre.
If you’re in Rockhampton or on the Capricorn Coast, we can meet over a coffee. When something needs fixing after launch, you’re dealing with the person who built it, not a ticket queue.
“From day one, Kat felt like a natural extension of our team at FBA.”

Process
How a project runs.
01
Scope
We work out what the site needs to do and who it's for. You get a fixed price against that scope, so the number you say yes to is the number you pay.
02
Design
You see the design before anything gets built, with two rounds of changes included.
03
Build
We build it, set up the search basics, link it to your Google Business Profile and test it on phones and desktops.
04
Handover
We show you how to update it yourself, and you keep the details to refer back to later.
05
After launch
Keep it looked after with a care plan, or run it yourself. Your call.
Not sure exactly what you need yet? That's what our Scope and Plan is for.
Local Work
Work close to home.

Emu Park Chiropractic
We designed and built a new Wix site around what patients ask before booking, and set things up so the website and email both run under the practice's own domain.
"I gave her a brief description of what I was thinking and she promptly came back to me with incredible designs."

CQUniversity Learning Management System
We led the design of CQUniversity's updated Moodle learning system. Built to WCAG 2.2 AA and used across a multi-campus university, this system also produced the university's first branded dark mode.
"Kat's commitment to accessibility was especially impressive."

FAQs
Common questions.
Most small business websites land between $5000 and $10,000, depending on the scale and functionality. Larger more complex builds usually need time defining a scope to establish the full budget.
We work by setting a clear scope and quoting a fixed price so you know exactly what you're getting and what it will cost from the start.
No. We're based in Rockhampton and most clients are in Central Queensland, but we also work Australia-wide, including Big Dog Pet Foods, a national pet food brand. Video calls handle the distance fine.
Usually we'll recommend Webflow if you want a custom design with room to grow and Wix Studio if you want something simpler to manage day to day. If you're not sure, I'll recommend one and explain why.
If you're e-commerce we will often recommend Shopify. We prefer to see what meets your needs rather than push you into a platform that won't suit.
No. We primarily work in Webflow and Wix Studio because they're more secure out of the box and need far less upkeep. If you're on WordPress now and want to move, we can handle the migration.
This depends on the size of the site and if you already have content ready to go. Often sites for small businesses can be up and running in a couple of weeks. If you have more complex functionality and integrations, or need to spend time with us helping to perfect your content it can take longer. We'll figure this out as we outline the scope so you'll know what to expect from the start.
Yes. We set them up in your business's name, so you always own them. Hosting and domain fees are passed on at cost.
Sometimes that's the smarter call. We'll look at what you have and tell you honestly which way we'd go.

Ready to build it properly?
Tell us about your business and what you need the site to do. You don't need to have it all figured out. That's what the first chat is for.
